Following are the classic warning signs that indicate dyslexia. Typically a diagnosis is made if a child shows three or more of these signs:
Speech Issues
- Significant speech delay
- Mixing up sounds in multi-syllable words
- Early stuttering
- Early cluttering
- Articulation Difficulties:
- m-n, r-l
- Even in adults
Difficulty Memorizing
- Spelling of their last name
- Address
- Phone number
- The alphabet
- Sequence, names of the letters & sounds they make
- Days of the Week, Months of the Year
- Multiplication tables
Odd Reading
- Can read a word on one page
- Won’t recognize it on the next page
- Won’t try to sound out an unknown word
Terrible Spelling
- Spend hours studying for test
- Vowels are very confusing
Dysgraphia
- Odd pencil grip
- Can’t make letters sit on the line
- Inconsistent slant of tall letters
- Odd beginning & ending points
- Inconsistent letter sizes, difficulty with descenders
- Odd use of space between words
- Can’t copy from the board
- Extreme difficulty learning cursive
